What to Pack for an Up North Michigan Getaway (Seasonal Guide)

Packing for Northern Michigan depends a lot on the season, but one thing stays the same: you’ll spend more time outside than you think.

Between the lake, the fire pit, and nearby spots, it’s worth packing with that in mind. Here’s what actually makes sense to bring, broken down by season.

Summer

Summer is all about the lake. Most of what you’ll use ends up being tied to the water or being outside for long stretches.

Start with the basics—swimsuits, towels, and comfortable clothes you don’t mind wearing more than once. You’ll likely be going in and out of the water throughout the day, so having an extra set of dry clothes helps.

Water shoes are a good idea, especially if you’re walking in and out of the lake or using the dock frequently. They’re not required, but most people are glad they brought them.

Bug spray is one of the few things you don’t want to forget. Evenings by the fire and time near the water can bring mosquitoes, especially earlier in the summer.

Sunscreen is just as important. You’ll get more sun than expected between being on the water and sitting outside.

A few extras that come in handy:

  • A hat and sunglasses
  • A sweatshirt or light layer for cooler nights
  • A small bag or tote for heading down to the lake
  • A cooler to store drinks in while you're on the lake

Fall

Fall in Northern Michigan is quieter, cooler, and a little less predictable day to day. You’ll want to be ready for temperature swings.

Layers are key. A light jacket in the morning might turn into short sleeves by the afternoon, then back to a heavier layer at night.

Bring:

  • Long sleeves and sweaters
  • A warmer jacket for evenings
  • Comfortable shoes for walking or short trails

If you plan to spend time outside—which you should—a blanket or extra layer for sitting around the fire makes a big difference once the temperature drops.

You’ll still want bug spray early in the season, though it’s usually less of an issue than summer.

If you’re visiting wineries or heading into nearby towns, a slightly nicer outfit can be useful, but nothing formal is needed.

Winter

Winter trips are a different experience entirely. It’s quieter, slower, and centered around being indoors with short stretches outside.

Warmth matters more than anything.

Start with a solid coat, gloves, and a hat. Waterproof boots are worth bringing, especially if there’s snow on the ground.

Under that, layers again make the biggest difference:

  • Thermal base layers
  • Sweaters or fleece
  • Thick socks

Even if you’re mostly staying inside, you’ll still go out—for fresh air, for a quick walk, or just to stand by the lake for a few minutes. Having the right gear makes that enjoyable instead of something you avoid.

Inside, you’ll want comfortable clothes for relaxing—sweats, lounge sets, anything easy to wear for long stretches.

A Few Things People Forget

No matter the season, there are a few items that tend to get overlooked:

  • Flip flops or easy slip-on shoes
  • Phone chargers (especially extras for different rooms)
  • Groceries or snacks for the first night
  • Drinks for the fire pit
  • A speaker or playlist ready to go

The Goal

You don’t need to overpack. You just want to be prepared for time outside, time on the lake, and nights that last longer than expected.

If you’ve got that covered, you’ll have everything you need.
